The IRS Is Not Calling You

The Internal Revenue Service does not initiate contact with taxpayers via the phone.

If someone calls saying that they are the IRS collecting back taxes - even if from a Washington, DC number - it is a scam. Don't engage or discuss with that person any further.

The only time I've ever had an IRS agent call me is to clarify a question or submission while working with a client, and only after a lengthy and drawn-out process that began with a letter to the client via certified mail.
